According to Dr. Anand, individuals may experience a reduction in symptoms in just a few hours and it may last for several days. This is in contrast to most oral antidepressants which can take weeks to begin working. Ketamine works differently from other depression drugs because it has major effects on glutamate, which is a different neurotransmitter that is much more prevalent in the brain. Unlike most other available antidepressants, which mainly work on the serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine systems, ketamine has a unique mechanism of action. Side Effects of Ketamine Nasal Spray The drug had some side effects, such as dizziness, dissociation, dysgeusia (change or distortion in sense of taste). These effects typically occurred shortly after taking the drug and lasted for around 90 minutes. However, the study showed that the drug was generally safe and well-tolerated. Ketamine Nasal Downsides Ketamine, despite being a promising antidepressant and anesthetic, comes with a few downsides. Apart from the potential side effects, it is unclear whether the drug is safe and effective for long-term use. As it impacts a significant neurochemical in the brain, interfering with it over an extended period may have unknown effects. Furthermore, ketamine is an addictive substance, and when used improperly, it can lead to substance abuse and addiction. Dr. Anand emphasizes that the long-term effects of ketamine use remain unknown. There is no guarantee that this treatment will work for all individuals suffering from treatment-resistant depression.
